Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art, and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example that art can be an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her how to use art as a method of expressing herself. While DuVernay lived within Compton with her family she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash in the house of a member on the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Apart from PR, the agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
